Senior Development Officer

Philanthropy plays a critical role in enabling ESMT Berlin to maintain and build on its status as a world-class business school. Since its foundation, ESMT has been successful in raising donations from a broad range of donors, including alumni, non-alumni, foundations and corporates.  We are keen to further strengthen and expand our fundraising efforts.

Therefore, the development & alumni relations team is looking for a new colleague as
Senior Development Officer
(full-time, 40 hours/week, to start in Spring 2021)

Reporting to the Director of Development and Alumni Relations and working closely with members of the senior management, the post holder will manage the cultivation and solicitation efforts involving a portfolio of ESMT´s most generous donors and prospects. S/he will build and manage relationships for himself/herself and others at ESMT with this group of individuals, acting as liaison between the President´s office, academics and head of departments, and donors.

Your main tasks will be

  • To research and identify prospects with whom ESMT will aim to develop significant philanthropic relationships. These will be drawn from several groups: high net-worth individuals (both alumni and non-alumni), the corporate sector, foundations and other bodies from whom funding may be obtained
  • To build and manage a network of relationships with prospective donors involving ESMT senior management and faculty
  • To ask prospects for gifts, either on their own or with others in 6-7 figures gift solicitations, and to support the President, head of departments, academic champions, and volunteers in this process
  • To play, as appropriate, a full role in the commissioning, drafting, and review of bespoke funding proposals for major gift solicitations
  • To be responsible for formulating and implementing stewardship strategies for all donors for whom the post holder is the primary relationship manager
  • To ensure that a current and accurate record of all development strategy and activity for which the post holder is responsible be maintained on Salesforce

Selection criteria

The work of the development and alumni relations team covers a wide range of activities and priorities.  All staff operate as a team and the post holder will need to become conversant with ESMT as a whole and especially with the numerous academic staff and volunteers.

Experience and knowledge

  • Significant fundraising experience, incl. proven success in personally securing 6-7 figure gifts
  • Experience of successfully managing a portfolio of major gifts prospects
  • An interest in education, a good general level of education, including a degree or equivalent
Skills and abilities
  • Proven ability to develop good working relationships with the academic community
  • Capability of representing ESMT at the highest levels of society across different cultural backgrounds
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure in a complex and demanding environment 
  • Proficiency in German and English
  • A combination of personal sensitivity, creativity and tact that is needed when working with senior academics, volunteers, and prospective major donors to ESMT 
  • High level of professionalism, self-motivation, organization, and proactive in taking initiative
