ESMT Berlin is looking for a

Research Associate/PhD Student (m/f/d)

in the field of Strategy/ Industrial Organization / Economics of Innovation and New Technology for a DFG-funded project, part-time (2/3 full-time equivalent) position, to start in September 2021 or later, with a temporary contract for 2+1 years

Your tasks will include

  • Execute a pre-structured research project on “The use of Markush structures in pharmaceutical patenting and their effect on R&D competition in drug development” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Stefan Wagner (principal investigator)
  • Acquire in-depth knowledge on important databases including patent and publication data, chemistry databases (SureChembl, PubMed, PATSTAT …) as well as R&D indicators and performance measures in the pharmaceutical industries
  • Present results at national and international conferences, preparation of scientific publications
  • Opportunity for independent research leading to a dissertation within ESMT’s PhD program (

You are qualified for this position, because you

  • Hold a master's degree (or equivalent) in Management, Economics, Engineering or related fields, preferably with knowledge on innovation management
  • Ideally, you bring along knowledge of product development processes in the pharmaceutical industry (not required)
  • Have a strong interest in independently conducting rigorous research
  • Have documented excellent academic achievements and an interest in an academic career
  • Have a good knowledge of quantitative methods, ideally a good command of statistical software packages such as Stata/R/Python as well as SQL and an interest in learning new research methods
  • Willingness to deep-dive in cutting edge data processing and the creation of novel indicators derived from chemical information
